Monica Sordo is the founder and creative director of the Monica Sordo jewelry brand. She has a degree in Fashion Styling by the Marangoni Institute in Milan and a degree in Fashion Marketing by the Instituto Europeo di Design in Madrid as well as a specialization in jewelry by GIA in New York. She was born and raised in Caracas surrounded by innovative metals from her father’s industrial design workshop. “His influence remains as my constant mentor and guide”, she said. “Guiding me in the high-end manufacturing processes”.
For a while, Monica was the Fashion Editor of Marie Claire Spain Magazine, she assisted in many PR gigs for Christian Louboutin and taught many courses at IED. She loves to explore, travel and calls herself a foodie.
Minimal and tomboish with very feminine accessories is how we define her style. “I like being comfy”, she said. “I love a great structure shirt as a basic to play around with”.
For the designer, a man with style is the one who is elegant in every aspect, someone who is authentic. For her, it’s about a combination of many elements, not just about the exterior.
Her mother’s vintage black and white chiffon dress, inspired by Marilyn Monroe’s
style, is the most valuable piece inside her closet. She always knew design was her true passion but it wasn´t until she embraced her creativity and entrepreneur potential that she decided to start a new story within the metal and precious stones world. “It was a very intimate and innate process”, she said. “Everything just happened when I realized that jewelry was the right channel to do so”.
Monica’s prime objective is to celebrate women. Her inspiration comes from the purpose of evoking an heroic woman, hailing from a tribe or empire, from history or mythology, yet explicated in modern and sophisticated designs. “The result is an assemble collection of luxury jewelry with a hint of rebellion,” she said. “Depicting an urban warrior, an amazon conquering the city. It is the reflection of fetish jewels, conceptualized as “epic jewelry” or “armor jewelry”, for the woman who feels invincible”.
What she loves most about her job is the opportunity of getting to know and learn from great talents and creative minds. She finds her inspiration in the Bauhaus, Art Deco and Kinetic. She finds the creativity of the designs from Acne Studios absolutely fascinating and she is actually looking forward for a pair of red bamboo boots from the brand.
Monica has made us all fall in love with her fresh and innovative vision. She has positioned her designs globally while becoming an ambassador from Mexico in the jewelry world.
