Fashion moment When I launch my own label during NYFW13 at the Nomad Hotel
Fashion editor Carine Roitfeld
Yliana Carolina Yepez is the founder and head designer of YLIANA YEPEZ. She grew up very attached to fashion. She used to be a model, and at the age of 16 she did her first campaign for Fran Beaufrand. She has worked with firms like Dior, Moschino, and Hugo Boss, among others. She represented her country, Venezuela, at events like “La Super modelo del mundo” and “Latin model of the year”. But it was until after she graduated from her bachelor’s in business that she decided to launch her own accessories brand, Blues by Kyky. “I’ve always had a thing for accessories”, she said. “I love to design them. I have felt connected with the industry since my first line in 1994”. Moving to New York made her realize that she wanted to move to the next level and in 2013 she presented for the first time her YLIANA YEPEZ collection in NYFW.
For Yliana, fashion is a way of expression that intertwines in all forms with art. “Art can be expressed in many ways, it is subjective but it always has an objective”. Her interest as a designer is to satisfy her clients, but mainly to go beyond her own expectations when it comes to her collections. “My objective is to overcome my own critic, to evolve in each of my collections and become better everyday with the purpose of offering a greater product to my clients”.
She loves the freshness, intelligence and professionalism of Marion Cotillard. The next piece she will add to her closet is a cape, and the book she has read more tan once is the Bible. Her favorite quote is “You can do it” and the last song she listened to on her iPod was from Coldplay. She has had many amazing experiences while working at the fashion industry but getting to know Karl Lagerfeld is by far her favorite moment.
She has an eclectic style, she can be classic and sophisticated one day, minimalist and simple the other. But among all the styles she can pull off, the acclaimed “fashion week look” (shiny colors, different textures, unpredicted accessories and many layers) is her favorite.
Her first design was inspired on her logo. “I drew one of the shades of the “Y” on an envelope, one simple detail that transmits the chic and simple essence of the brand. She also shared with us a fun anecdote on how she created her iconic minaudiere. “Everything started the first time I went to a gala in NY, just after I launched my brand”, she said. “At that time, I had not yet designed a night clutch, so I styled one form another brand. I could notice people talking about my beautiful creation before I could even tell them it was not my design. That same night I designed the minaudiere”.
Yliana has conquered the national and international fashion markets. Thanks to her incredible designs, authentic materials and sophisticated details, YLIANA YEPEZ has become one of the most trendy and acclaimed designers. We at The Fancy Archive are excited to see her next collection in F/W 2015.
