Sydney Brown, a talented shoe designer from L.A., is a pioneer in the future of the ethical fashion industry and what we call an ambassador for the new wave of the sustainable design movement. Always working with sustainable production bases, she has succeeded in filling the gap between eco-friendly and fashion-forward designs, by offering a holistic, sophisticated, trendy and luxurious footwear collection.
“Everything started with my 2010 New Year’s resolution,” she said. “I challenged myself and stopped wearing leather for a while. But one day I had an important event where I had to wear beautiful shoes and everything fell apart”, she said.
Being a vegetarian, the idea of not eating meat but buying leather goods always conflicted her. She saw a huge opportunity on the market; no one was offering sustainable but luxurious and beautiful shoe designs.
When talking about her design process, her main focus is the materials and the transparency of the supply chain. She first hunts the right sustainable materials and based on that, she starts making art with her products.
For her, fashion is based in design and functionality. “When I lived in Japan, I had the opportunity to live by the Shinto religion,” she said. “They believe every object has a god and a spirit and that inspired me. I handmade all of my shoes so part of my soul, part of my being goes into each pair of shoes. I could say my creations are my art form.” She has demonstrated how fashion and the environment can be interlaced and work as a team without doing any harm.
Sydney is a music hunter. In Japan, she worked for over 15 years as a music promoter and currently organizes music festivals every June. She believes the fashion press and bloggers are globally leading the fashion awareness movement. Martin Margiela and jewelry designer Adina Mills are among her favorite artists. She loves overalls and full body jumpsuits when working but admits she needs to add basics to her wardrobe. Meditation is a lifestyle for her and one of the most important moments of her days. Danish designs and the baggy style inspire her. “When talking about fashion, comfort is important,” she said.
For her talent, vision and eagerness to support the environment, The Fancy Archive celebrates Sydney Brown’s potential for creating sustainable art through her designs.
