Rolando Santana is the Creative director of Rolando Santana and Rolo&Ale. He spent his early childhood learning all the necessary skills of the dressmaking business – production factory, the art of pattern making, construction and sewing. He remembers how he used to love spending hours in fabric stores absorbing the colors, textures and different materials. As Rolando grew up, so did his desire to become a fashion designer. In 2001 he left home and moved to New York where he graduated with a degree in international business at Mercy College and a degree in fashion design at FIT. He worked as an assistant designer at Spenser Jeremy, where his talent was immediately recognized and was promoted to dress-designer. He was also the creative director at Donna Morgan, the Vice President of design at Kellwood Company’s Designer Alliance, and in 2009, he launched his own label. But that’s not all, last year he launched his second label, Rolo & Ale, a fashion-forward label designed for the most fashionable crew.
Rolando surely has inspired all women. His primary purpose has always been to make us feel beautiful in his designs. His feminine detail, elegant draping, and sophisticated, timeless designs characterize Rolando’s creations.
He is one of the few Mexican designers who have presented collections during the past years at Fashion Week New York, having always an incredible audience full of top celebrities, opinion leaders and elite personalities. He knew fashion design was his future since he was a child. “Since I was five I could say,” he said. “I love that fashion changes all the time and I love that fashion makes me evolve every season.” His best achievement is launching his own brand and his style, as a designer is timeless feminine.
The oldest piece inside his closet is a navy jacket by Woo Young Mi that he bought in Paris many years ago. And the next thing he will add to his closet is a one-of-a-kind double face cashmere coat. The Pre-code fashion, the dress in the 70’s and minimalism are styles that inspire him but his real inspiration is a woman who is confident, secure and open to try new things. He has three habits: a good, a bad and a great one. “A bad one, looking at my phone more than I should,” he said; a good one, going over what I have in mind for my day at work every morning; and a nice one, greeting my staff with a smile.” Besides having a great personality and an incredible taste in his field, he also has an incredible initiative. To support new designers, Rolando has been one of the judges from ELLE Mexico Diseña for the last two years. And let us tell you he’s done a great job.
Rolando is a talent that constantly inspires the fashion industry. He is an incredible dressmaker and an excellent artist. The Fancy Archive is proud of to have fashion designer Rolando Santana archived, as we know his creations are timeless.
