It’s lunchtime and Monica Diaz, deputy editor of Cosmopolitan Mexico, left the office to meet with us. She started her journey into the fashion world as an assistant at Glamour Mexico/Latin America. But her attention to detail and her eagerness to analyze every detail in the magazine’s pages helped her move quickly to the top. Soon, at that same magazine, she became the editorial coordinator.
Knowing that publishing and fashion in New York City are one of the most competitive industries, Monica didn’t have second thoughts and packed her things to move to the cosmopolitan city. Here, she graduated with a master’s degree in branding by the School of Visual Arts. She also worked at Colgate-Palmolive with a new product development team as well as at Young & Rubicam, an advertising agency.
Whenever she feels she’s getting into a rut, she starts hunting for new challenges. Besides being in charge of Cosmopolitan Mexico magazine, Monica currently teaches design and publishing courses at Universidad Iberoamericana’s School of Communications.
From traveling to Rome with Gucci and to New York with Levi’s, Monica says that interviewing Daniel Radcliffe at the Waldorf Astoria in New York has been until now, one of the most memorable experiences for her. To overcome new achievements is what drives her to be better every day.
“My style? Well I can be all black on Monday but entirely neon on Tuesday,” says Monica. “I first decide what heels I want to rock that day, and based on that I choose my outfit.” Monica chooses her look based on her mood and we can all agree she always knows how to pull it together! She can be as classic as her vintage pearls or as chic and aggressive as her Alexander McQueen studs. She loves her deep cranberry TOMS as well as her pointy shiny gold Jimmy Choo’s. “It’s all about updating,” she says.
She constantly lives on the hunt for new ideas, projects and challenges – and wow – she really knows how to make them come true! “Challenging myself and feeling capable is the most important highlight in my professional career,” she said. Working in editorial and being a storyteller will always be what makes her the happiest.
A funny fact is that on her free times she reads magazines. Just like Confucius said, “Do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.” Running and yoga help her decompress but we agree with her when she says that there is nothing more relaxing than watching a Friends’ marathon on your sofa with a glass of dry but still juicy red wine.
But Monica – do you ever have free time? The Fancy Archive celebrates Monica Diaz for her ability to overcome her own challenges and making her passion her most valuable goal.
